Gardens, no matter how small, can serve as "sacred texts" in which we can find the word of God spoken, if we only have the faith and patience to look for it there.

Daniel Deffenbaugh, author of Learning the Language of the Fields: Tilling and Keeping as Christian Vocation will speak at First Mennonite Church at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2010.  His talk is free and open to the public.

Haiti Earthquake Response

First Mennonite Church joins people of good will everywhere in responding to the grief and struggle of the Hatian people following the January 12 earthquake.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has a 50-year history of working in Haiti and a long tradition of responding to disasters, wherever they occur.  Immediately after the disaster MCC released emergency assistance resources and dispatched an assessment team.  Complete information is available on the MCC Haiti response pages.

Relief kit contentsFirst Mennonite Church is receiving cash donations to help MCC with a multiyear recovery effort.  Contributions may be made at any time and should be designated, "Haiti."  Online donations may be made directly to MCC.  DONATE

In addition MCC has requested 20,000 relief kits, 10,000 new heavy comforters (single/twin size preferred), and 10,000 new flat sheets (double,queen or king-size).  Light colors are requested as sheets will also be used as mosquito netting and light colors are less attractive to mosquitoes.

Contributions may be delivered to First Mennonite Church on Sunday mornings or telephone 402-467-1526 to arrange a time. 

 

Hesston College Basketball

Dustin Galyon, head coach of the Hesston College (Kansas) men's basketball team, will be the special speaker at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 24.  His message, based on Galatians 2:20, will be "Identity Theft."

Coach Galyon and members of the team will also share with the Youth and Jr. Youth Sunday School classes. Players will give leadership to the worship service.

Following the service a potluck dinner will be held. The public is invited.

Brazil Habitat Trip

Jim Janzen & Carol KnieriemFirst Mennonite members Carol Knieriem & Jim Janzen traveled to Feria Nova, Brazil on January 22 to join a team of volunteers with Habitat for Humanity's Global Village program. They worked side-by-side with people who need a decent place to live, helping to build simple, affordable houses.

Thanks for helping to provide a Thanksgiving meal for those in need. Your generous donations of sweet yams and stuffing mix enabled us to exceed our goal of 300 of each. 

Donations have been delivered.   People's City Mission will distribute them to needy families, along with turkeys and other Thanksgiving food items.

Want to build on the movie "FireProof"? Then join the adult Sunday School class reviewing questions and scriptures that will help build principles for strong, God-centered, lifelong marriages. Class begins Sunday, November the 8th. Let's learn together as we discuss "Fireproof Your Marriage."  The group meets in Room 8.

Troyer Family to Sing Gospel Music

 

Troyer Family"God's Grace" will be the musical message of the Troyer Family during the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 25.

Steve and Katie Troyer sing traditional style southern gospel music with their four young children.  They are making a month-long 5000 mile tour from their home in Fort St. John British Columbia, Canada.
