Peacemaking Workshop 2010

Peacemaking Workshop XXIII

An ecumenical gathering - March 26-27, 2010

Joel SatoreJoel Sartore brings a sense of humor and a mid-western work ethic to all of his National Geographic Magazine assignments. In over two decades and more than two dozen stories with the National Geographic Society, Joel has covered everything from the remote Amazon rain forest to beer-drinking, mountain-racing firefighters in the United Kingdom.

Joel is committed to conservation, especially in the Great Plains where he has lived his whole life. In his time with National Geographic, he has focused on endangered species and land use issues. He is co-founder of the Grassland Foundation, and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

He has written several books including Photographing Your Family, Face to Face with Grizzlies, and Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky. His latest book, Rare: Portraits of America's Endangered Species will be published in March, 2010.

Besides the work he has done for National Geographic, Joel has completed assignments for Audubon Magazine, Time, Life, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and contributed to numerous book projects. Joel and his work have been the subject of several national broadcasts including National Geographic's Explorer, the BBC, the NBC Nightly News, NPR's Weekend Edition, Anderson Cooper's Planet in Peril series, and an hour-long PBS documentary. He is also a regular contributor on the CBS Sunday Morning Show with Charles Osgood.

Joel is always happy to return to home base from his travels around the world. He lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife Kathy and their three children.

Witnessing Change: A Call for Action

A top wildlife and nature photographer turns his lens on us, asking whether we value wildlife for its own sake, or only to the degree that it can produce things for us. In this critical 11th hour, Sartore sounds a warning bell and a convincing call for change. This includes images and discussion of some of North America's most endangered species.

Grounded: A Reflection on the Use of Life and Land

When Joel Sartore's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, this National Geographic photographer who had traveled the world for 18 years knew it was time to stay home. His wife's illness triggered a reconnection with family and with the reason Sartore takes pictures: to show people that wild places and Earth's creatures need and deserve protection.
