"TILLING & KEEPING" TODAY -
Daniel Deffenbaugh, author of Learning the Language of the Fields: Tilling
& Keeping as Christian Vocation, will speak at First Mennonite Church
TODAY at 1:30 p.m. Deffenbaugh, a
professor of religion at Hastings College, suggests that "our backyards- our
gardens- can also serve as our sanctuaries, places where we can, through our
faithful tilling and keeping, gain new insights into the nature of divine
grace, insights that might eventually influence the way we come into God's
presence on Sunday mornings."
Everyone is invited to this free event, organized by Common Good
Farm. A fellowship time will
follow.
HABITAT BRAZIL - We welcome Jim Janzen and Carol Knieriem
who will report on their recent experience with Habitat for Humanity in
Brazil. Jim and Carol are members of
First Mennonite Church and live in York, Nebraska.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL - Next Sunday, two adult classes
for the spring term (March through May) will begin. Kevin Troyer
will lead a class based on the Herald Press Adult Bible Study
series; the topic this spring will be "Teachings on Community"
("Community with a mission" in March, "Teachings of
Jesus" in April, and "Teachings of the Church" in May).
Also, Gordon Brubacher will be leading a course called "Archaeology,
Faith, and the Old, Old, New Old Testament," which will
suggest that archaeology helps us read the OT in some new and better
ways, and that the most important of these bear on the social
conscience of the OT in its own context and for today. Everyone is
encouraged to be involved in either of these classes and the discussions they
will prompt.
HESSTON CHORALE - The Hesston Chorale will present a
concert at First Mennonite Church during the worship service on March
14. Much of the music will include
Lenten and Holy Week themes. This
would be great opportunity to invite friends for this special morning.
MARCH POTLUCK - So that we can enjoy fellowship with the
Hesston Chorale, our monthly potluck will be held on March 14. We will need to provide for the 25 members
of the Chorale and for visitors so please plan on bringing extra food.
OUR DAILY BREAD - The
devotional booklets for the next quarter have arrived. They are above the church mailboxes for
anyone to take home.
|
|
FULL-FLAVORED GROUP - The next meeting of the
Full-Flavored Small Group will be at the Kyms, 101 S. C St. Milford, on
Wednesday, March 3, at 7:00 p.m.

QUARTERLY OFFERING
CHANGE - The generosity of the congregation has allowed us to make
significant progress on paying down the building loan ahead of schedule over
the past year! In response to this,
the Leadership Board has decided to make a change in the offering
schedule. For our quarterly
"extra" offering, a special project or program will become the
focus. If you would like to nominate
a project or program, please contact Brenda McLey or Pastor David. The next quarterly offering will be
accepted on Palm Sunday, March 28.
Designated donations to
the building fund are still needed.
Our monthly mortgage payment is $1,100.76. The 2010 budget includes $500 per month
for loan payments. We are relying on
designated offerings to cover the remaining $600 per month and to make any
accelerated principal payments. Gifts
designated "building fund" may be made through regular Sunday offerings at
any time.
SUNDAY SCHOOL - Our children and young people will
continue to participate in the Circle of Grace program during Sunday School
today (and March 14 for Junior Youth & Youth). If you have questions,
contact Jeanette Harder or Wanda Stauffer.
CONFERENCE MINISTER POSITION - Central Plains Mennonite
Conference is seeking a gifted leader for the position of Executive
Conference Minister. This is a full-time position for an individual who will
be able to give overall leadership to the conference through tending and
articulating the vision of Central Plains. It also involves leading and
working with a ministry team that has two members in place. A complete
job description is available at www.centralplainsmc.org.
If you know of someone who you think is especially gifted for this role
please encourage them to apply. Interested individuals should forward their
Ministerial Leadership Information Form and send a letter of application to Central
Plains Search Committee, c/o Diane Zaerr Brenneman, 3243 Johnson Iowa Rd.,
Wellman, IA 52356. The target start date for this position is August 1,
2010.
