ENVIRONMENT & SPIRITUALITY -
Daniel Deffenbaugh, author of Learning the Language of the Fields: Tilling
& Keeping as Christian Vocation, will speak at First Mennonite Church
on Sunday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m. Deffenbaugh, a professor of religion at Hastings College,
suggests that "our backyards- our gardens- can also serve as our sanctuaries,
places where we can, through our faithful tilling and keeping, gain new
insights into the nature of divine grace, insights that might eventually
influence the way we come into God's presence on Sunday mornings." Everyone is invited to this free event,
organ-ized by Common Good Farm. A
fellowship time will follow.
SCHOOL KIT NIGHT THIS WEDNESDAY - All ages are invited to
church this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. to make school kits for the MCC Sale. There will be jobs for everyone; those who
can sew and those who can't. Please
bring a sewing machine if you have one.
See Tammy for information.
Come for fellowship, cookies, and school kit assembly.
JOIN US FOR LUNCH - We will have a fellowship meal today
after the worship service. Everyone
is invited to stay for great food and fellowship.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL - Plans for two adult Sunday
School classes for the spring term (March through May) have been
finalized. Kevin Troyer will lead a class based on the Herald
Press Adult Bible Study series; the topic this spring will be "Teachings
on Community" ("Community with a mission" in March,
"Teachings of Jesus" in April, and "Teachings of the
Church" in May). Also, Gordon Brubacher will be leading a course
called "Archaeology, Faith, and the Old, Old, New Old Testament,"
which will suggest that archaeology helps us read the OT in some
new and better ways, and that the most important of these bear
on the social conscience of the OT in its own context and for
today. Everyone is encouraged to be involved in either of these classes
and the discussions they will prompt.
QUARTERLY OFFERING
CHANGE - The generosity of the congregation has allowed us to make
significant progress on paying down the building loan ahead of schedule over
the past year! In response to this,
the Leadership Board has decided to make a change in the offering schedule. Designated donations to the building fund
are still welcome and will be accepted at any time. For our quarterly "extra" offering, a special project
or program will become the focus. If
you would like to nominate a project or program, please contact Brenda McLey
or Pastor David. The next quarterly
offering will be accepted on Palm Sunday, March 28.
OUR DAILY BREAD - The
devotional booklets for the next quarter have arrived. They are above the church mailboxes for
anyone to take home.
BUILDING USE - Youth from Bethesda Mennonite Church will be
spending an overnight in our fellowship hall this Friday, February 26.
BIRTHDAY AND ANNIVERSARY OFFERING - This morning we give
thanks for the blessings of life with our birthday and anniversary
offering. For only $75 a month we can
bless the lives of three students in Calcutta, India.
HABITAT BRAZIL - Next Sunday, during the worship service,
Jim and Carol will report on their Habitat for Humanity experience in Brazil.
HAITI MISSION TRIP - Thanks to all who donated to Miriam
Cummings for her mission trip to Haiti.
We were able to send her with a good assortment of medical supplies
and $850 toward her airfare. Keep her
in your prayers as she serves for 2 weeks.
SOUPER BOWL DONATIONS - Thank you so much from the High
School Youth Group for your donations.
We were able to give $318 to the Northeast Food Pantry of Lincoln.
FULL-FLAVORED GROUP - The next meeting of the
Full-Flavored Small Group will be at the Kyms, 101 S. C St. Milford, on
Wednesday, March 3, at 7:00 p.m.
THANK YOU - Thank you to our many First Mennonite Faith
Family Friends who remembered me during my week in the hospital, with
prayers, visits, phone calls, flowers and many expressions of care and
concern. May God continue to bless the many ways you continue to reach out to
those with special needs. Love You All! - Marlin Kym
ANOTHER THANK YOU - MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) is
deeply grateful for the overwhelming response to the January 12 earthquake in
Haiti. MCC is developing a multi-year response to utilize the over $8 million
that has been donated. Kurt Hildebrand, an MCC worker in Haiti,
recently said, "Haitians were accustomed to being considered by the outside
world as a hopeless basket case that wasn't worth the effort. I want us to all think and pray very hard
about how we can sustain the interest." MCC is committed to working in
Haiti long after the media spotlight fades as it has in other places; New
Orleans, Sudan, Indonesia, etc.
However, due to a decrease in general giving over the past two years
MCC has been forced to make cuts to vital programming around the world.
Please consider giving a "where needed most" donation to support MCC's work.
Send checks to MCC Central States, PO Box 235, North
Newton, KS 67117 or at mcc.org.
ONE MORE WEEK FOR DONATIONS - Mennonite Central Committee
(MCC) is asking for 20,000 relief kits, 25,000 heavy comforters (twin size
preferred), and 10,000 flat sheets (double, queen, or king in light colors)
by February 28. All items should be
new and can be donated here at church.
For complete information, go to www.fmclincoln.org/haitiearthquakeresponse.
SUNDAY SCHOOL - Our children and young people will
continue to participate in the Circle of Grace program during Sunday School
on February 21, and 28 (and March 14 for Junior Youth & Youth). If you
have questions, contact Jeanette Harder or Wanda Stauffer.
