Announcements

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL - Want to build on the movie "FireProof"?  Then join the adult Sunday School class reviewing questions and scriptures that will help build principles for strong, God-centered, lifelong marriages.  Class begins Sunday, November the 8th.  Let's learn together as we discuss "Fireproof Your Marriage."

CIRCLE OF GRACE - We will be using the Circle of Grace curriculum for children K-12 in January 2010.  The goal of the Circle of Grace program is to educate children and empower children and young people to actively participate in a safe environment for themselves and others.  The training for this curriculum will be on Sunday, November 8, from 12-3, lunch included.  Teachers are urged to attend; parents are welcome.  Please RSVP to Jeanette Harder.

THE SHARING FUND balance is below zero due to increased need in our community and congregation.  Designated contributions may be made through the morning offering.

WHICH TOPIC? - Are you into wellness (exercise, eating healthy, emotional and mental health, etc.) issues?  How about "going green" (reducing our carbon footprint)? Maybe economic justice (fair trade, living wage, advocacy for the poor) or financial stewardship (accountability to God for our finances)? Would you like to focus more on the scriptures (in-depth studies, how scriptures can and have made a difference in our lives, etc)?

Now is your opportunity to VOTE on the topics you are most passionate about or would like to learn more about.  In 2010 our congregation will focus on one of these topics.  Please vote today.  Indicate the two topics you are most interested in.  Place your ballot in the box in the fellowship hall.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR TELLING IN CHURCH - The latest newsletter from the Western District Resource Library features two dozen beautifully written and illustrated children's books that could be used for children's time during worship, for Sunday School, or for home use.  Themes include friendship, kindness, outreach, generosity, praise, creation and more.  Find it online at: www.mennowdc.org/2009-11-CIO.pdf or take a printed copy from beneath the mailboxes.

Mission and Service News

PCM THANKSGIVING - We are committed to providing 300 boxes of Stove Top Stuffing and 300 large cans of yams for Thanksgiving dinners to be distributed to needy families by People's City Mission.  Leave your donation in the fellowship hall by November 15.

GIFTS OF LOVE STORE is coming soon!!  City Impact's Christmas store will be open in mid-December, with volunteer sign-up beginning Nov. 2.  Each year, FMC has donated gifts and numerous volunteers have enjoyed helping with this exciting outreach to the community.  If you, your family, or small group would like to volunteer, go to www.cityimpact.org to sign-up, or let Wanda Stauffer know.  Good time slots go fast.  And start shopping for your donations.

MEAT CANNING - MCC Meat Canning will be held November 9 and 10 at the Milford Fire Hall.  Adult and youth help is appreciated any time during the two-day period.  Donations for the purchase of turkey meat may be made through the offering and should be designated "Meat Canning."

MCC MINI AUCTION - First Mennonite Church in Beatrice will have their annual Mini Auction on Sunday Nov.15th, 6:30p.m, on West Highway 4 Beatrice.  There will be lots of food and auction items to purchase and enjoy.  All proceeds go to the Nebraska MCC Relief Sale.  You are invited to enjoy an evening with friends from Beatrice.

MCC ASIA DISASTERS APPEAL INCREASES - In response to the needs of flooding and earthquake survivors in Asia, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is increasing its appeal for donations to $250,000.  The additional contributions will allow MCC and its partners to respond to extensive flooding damage in southern India and Cambodia and to provide permanent housing for people in Indonesia, where earthquakes devastated entire villages.  Please donate placing gifts designated "Asia Disasters" in the offering or by sending checks to MCC Central States PO Box 235 North Newton, KS 67117 or online at donate.mcc.org.

DONATE HOUSEHOLD GOODS - Imagine you have "aged out" of foster care, are starting over after living at the mission, or just arrived as a refugee.  You need everything.  Every year hundreds of people in Lincoln have to set up housekeeping from scratch.

Outreach Commission, with tremendous help from Stan Harder, is developing a "Virtual Warehouse," a private, password protected, website.  We will ask you to list things you could donate: furniture, kitchen items, lamps, linens, and anything else a new household might need.  Donors will be asked to store their items until they are selected by authorized agency staff members for people in need.

The website will be ready soon.  For now, send an email listing items with a brief description of each to david<AT>fmclincon<D0T>org.  Feel free to attach a photo if that would be helpful.

BIRTHDAY OFFERING - Our offering to support Vocational Training and Community Schools programs in Calcutta, India through Mennonite Central Committee's Global Family Program will be held next Sunday.  Those with birthdays or anniversaries in November are invited to help us meet our annual goal of $900.

FAIR TRADE COFFEE IS COMING!

The Senior Youth will soon have a table in the fellowship hall with coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for sale from the Mennonite Central Committee Equal Exchange Coffee Project.

For many of us, coffee, tea, or chocolate are important parts of our daily lives, as well as the life of our congregation.  But they are also very important in the lives of the people who grow them.  Coffee, especially, is big business and is a direct link between our community and farming communities in Latin America, Africa and Asia.  In recent years, a crisis in the world coffee market has meant that many farmers typically receive less than the cost of production for their beans.

But there is an alternative: FAIR TRADE.  Fair trade shares the bounty of the coffee trade with those who grow the crop, helping them build a better future for themselves and their communities.  By purchasing fair trade coffee from our youth, you can share fellowship with our global neighbors in several different ways.  You will know that the farmers received a fair price for their harvest.  Also, for every package of coffee purchased, a contribution is made to MCC's Small Farmer Fund.  In addition, our youth will receive almost $3 per bag for their youth convention fund.
