Announcements

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP - "Bowling and Bonfire" is today with the youth group from Shickley's Salem Mennonite Church.  Meet at Rick & Wanda Stauffer's at 1:30.  We will bowl at Parkway Lanes and then come back to Stauffer's for a bonfire.

LOOK FOR YOUR NAME - We want you in our church directory.  The directory is distributed everyone in our church.  Please check the pages on the wall of the fellowship hall for your name, address, birthday, etc. and make any corrections.  If you don't see your name there, write it on the wall!

PRIMARY SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS - We will have a meeting and lunch after the morning worship service today.

SAMARITAN COUNSELING - Building strong families is at the core of the new Samaritan Neighborhood Counseling Initiative.  Read their monthly update on the bulletin board.

WORLD COMMUNION - This morning we join together with Christians around the world in a sharing the Lord's Supper.  First Mennonite Church practices an open Communion.  All who love the Lord and desire to follow him are welcome to partake.

MEMBERSHIP - We plan to receive new members later this year.  People may be received as members by baptism, transfer, or confession of faith.  Let David Orr know if you might be interested in becoming a member of the congregation.

TROYER FAMILY - "God's Grace" will be the musical message of the Troyer Family during the worship service on Sunday, October 25.  Steve and Katie and their four young children are from Fort St. John in northern British Columbia.  This would be a great opportunity to invite friends and family who would enjoy traditional style southern gospel music.

LEADERSHIP BOARD - Minutes are posted on the bulletin board east of the kitchen.

LARGE PRINT - Large Print Hymnals are now available at the audiovisual desk.

TO OUR FIRST MENNONITE FAITH FAMILY:

Thank You, Thank You, for your many expressions of concern and encouragement following my emergency surgery.  The road to recovery is going quite well.  With time and a great deal of patience this, too, will pass.  Your many acts of friendship, expressed through your words of encouragement, your visits, your cards, your meals, your flowers and your many prayers are received with deep appreciation and gratitude.  May God's Blessing rest on each one of you as you, faithfully, pursue the journey of ministry God continues to have in store for First Mennonite Church. -Marlin Kym

HELP STOP HUNGER - It's CROP WALK time again, where neighbors from different faiths, cultures and ages walk together to take a stand against hunger in our world.  Lincoln's Crop Walk will take place on Sunday afternoon, October 11.  Walkers will meet at 1:30 at Christ United Methodist Church, 45th and A Sts. for a walk of about three miles.  This year, if you are contributing to Mennonite Central Committee through CROP, please make out your checks to MCC, indicating CROP on the memo line.

GIFT OF MOVIE & POPCORN - The Sr. High Youth Group thanks First Mennonite Church for your constant care and support.  Let us treat you to a movie on Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. at FMC.  Complimentary popcorn and sodas will be served by the Sr. High Youth Group.

FULL-FLAVORED - The small group, Full-Flavored, will meet this Wednesday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Jolene Boshart's house.  Please bring any study ideas you may have.

ROOFING INFORMATION - For those roofing next weekend, we will start Friday, October 9th at 1:00 pm removing the shingles and putting on new paper and starting shingles.  Saturday morning we'll begin at 8:00 am or shortly after the dew is off to continue the new shingles.  Please let Wade or Dallas know if you can come so we can plan food.

MISSION STIMULUS PAYMENT II - In response to special needs during the current economic downturn, the Leadership Board has agreed to make a second above-budget gift of $1,000 to People's City Mission and a $1,200 gift to Christian Peacemaker Teams to support one month of Jessica Frederick's work in At-Tuwani.  Her latest email report is posted on the bulletin board.

CONSIDER A FIXED ANNUITY - If you are looking for a way to create a steady stream of income during retirement, consider a SureRate fixed annuity from MMA - and help fund church mortgages at the same time!  Our MMA advocate, Sue Burkey, can help you learn more about them.

HABITAT HOMES - Are you in need of permanent, stable housing?  Do you know someone who is?  Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity is hosting Family Selection information sessions for anyone who is interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner.  Application for homeownership is available only by attending one of these sessions:  Tuesday, October 6 at 6:30 p.m. or Saturday, October 10 at 9:30 a.m.  Both sessions will be held at First Mennonite Church, 7300 Holdrege.  Applicants should bring copies of Federal income tax returns (Form 1040) for 2007 and 2008, pay stubs for the last 30 days and proof of legal residency in the United States.  Childcare is available with 24-hour advance notice.  Call 477-9184 if you have any questions.

MCC IS RESPONDING TO ASIA DISASTERS - You can help victims of Asia disasters through MCC. Working with the local Mennonite church and other trusted partners, Mennonite Central Committee is meeting human needs following the devastation of recent earthquakes in Indonesia and Typhoon Ketsana in the Philippines and Vietnam. MCC has committed an initial $100,000 to the effort and welcomes your gifts of money to meet immediate emergency needs and support recovery efforts. Contributions may be made at any MCC office; online at mcc.org/donate; or by calling toll free1-888-563-4676 or 316-283-2720. Please designate gifts for "Asia Disasters." Keep watching our website, mcc.org, for updated information. We invite your prayers for people affected by the disasters throughout Asia.
