CAN YOU HELP? - A letter is inserted in the bulletin today from Beth Martin, of Chicago, Illinois. Beth called our church and is looking for the gravesite of her great-great-grandmother, Elisabeth Wedel Buller, a Mennonite woman who died in Lincoln in 1874. Please read the letter and see if you have an idea of where to look. Any history detectives out there? |

Dear First Mennonite Church, I'm somewhat at my wits end with trying to track down information on my great-great-grandmother, Elisabeth Buller. I'm hoping that a member of your congregation or that of another Nebraska Mennonite Church may be a history buff on Mennonite travels through the state from the late 1800's, and will have a suggestion on where Elisabeth is buried. I've been in contact with Nebraska State government cemetery personnel Patricia Churray and Wyuka Cemetery's Fran Baatz. Patricia has shared with me a great deal of her information and research, but we did not find Elisabeth's grave. Fran says she is not at Wyuka either, even though it was the only cemetery in existence during the year Elizabeth died. She is not at the 'poor farm', Fairview or Teachman. In fact, she shows up on no cemetery database in the country. So, given that, my last hope is the Mennonite Church itself. My family was part of the Mennonite emigration from Russia. My great-great grandmother's name was; Elisabeth Wedel Buller, who died August 28, 1874. In a letter from 1879, her husband David Buller wrote "My wife Elisabeth died August 28, 1874 and was buried in Lincoln, Nebr. We had just come to America and had not yet reached South Dakota. She was very grieved; she did not want to come to America. This caused her death. We had a nice large farm in Russia." They were originally from Prussia and Russia. David Buller, along with their 7 children continued on to Childstown, SD and then to Marion, SD. He is buried in the Buller family cemetery on the original Buller family farm in Marion, SD. My hope is that she is in a marked grave on private property somewhere. Or that she is buried outside Lincoln in another town and he was mistaken with saying the town was Lincoln. Either that or she is misnamed as Fuller or a similar name. We will be in Lincoln on July 5th for a wedding. I will have my 82 year old mother with me who has lit the fire underneath me to find our relative!! I would love to solve this mystery! Thanks for any help, Beth Martin Chicago Illinois |
