Brrrrring the Troops Home Rally and March
January 27, 2007
500 Nebraskans braved frigid morning temperatures and north winds for a "Bring the Troops Home" rally and march on Saturday, January 27. The event was described by the media as one of the largest peace protests Lincoln has seen since the Vietnam era. Seven speakers delivered stirring speeches (click names for full texts).
"We are here on this cold day on the steps of the Nebraska Capitol joining persons all over this country to ask our Government to bring our troops home," said Bishop Ann Sherer of the Nebraska United Methodist Conference.
“A new course of action is needed in Iraq and it’s not 21,000 more troops. It’s not more killing," said Michael Morris, a sergeant in the Army Reserves 2/377th Regt. 95th Division. He says, "We need to change our way of thinking. We’ve relied on violence far too long to solve our problems.”
"This war is a mistake. I don't need to tell you that. Everybody seems to know that, but President Bush," said Nebraska State Senator Bill Avery.
Other speakers included:
- Lindsay Graef - Lincoln East High School student and peace organizer
- Jeannette Jones - Professor of Ethnic Studies at UNL
- Walter McDowell - Gulf War Veteran
- Dominique Garay - Slam Poet
The rally and march received extensive media attention. Online reports are available:
